Prayer is an essential aspect of the Christian faith, and it is one of the most powerful tools that we have as believers. Through prayer, we have the opportunity to communicate with God, seek His guidance, and express our gratitude and love for Him. However, prayer is not just about asking for things that we want or need. It is also about building a relationship with God and aligning our hearts with His will. In this article, we will explore seven proper ways to pray based on Biblical text.

  • Pray with faith and belief

  • Pray with humility

  • Pray with gratitude

  • Pray with repentance

  • Pray with perseverance

  • Pray with the Holy Spirit's guidance

  • Pray in Jesus' name

1. Pray with faith and belief

The first proper way to pray is to pray with faith and belief. In the Gospel of Mark 11:24, Jesus says, "Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." This verse emphasizes the importance of having faith and belief in God when we pray. We must trust that God hears our prayers and that He will answer them according to His will.

2. Pray with humility

The second proper way to pray is to pray with humility. In the Gospel of Luke 18:10-14, Jesus tells the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. The Pharisees prayed with pride, thanking God that he was not like other people. The tax collector, on the other hand, prayed with humility, acknowledging his sinfulness and asking for God's mercy. Jesus praised the tax collector's prayer, saying, "For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." (Luke 18:14)

3. Pray with gratitude

The third proper way to pray is to pray with gratitude. In the book of Philippians 4:6-7, Paul tells us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." When we pray with gratitude, we acknowledge God's goodness and faithfulness in our lives, and we express our thankfulness for His blessings.

4. Pray with repentance

The fourth proper way to pray is to pray with repentance. In the book of 1 John 1:9, we read, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." When we pray with repentance, we acknowledge our sins and ask for God's forgiveness. We must confess our sins and turn away from them, seeking to live a life that honors God.

5. Pray with perseverance

The fifth proper way to pray is to pray with perseverance. In the Gospel of Luke 11:5-8, Jesus tells the parable of the persistent friend. In this parable, a man goes to his friend's house at midnight to ask for bread, but his friend is already in bed and does not want to be disturbed. However, the man keeps knocking and asking until his friend finally gives him what he needs. Jesus concludes the parable by saying, "I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need." (Luke 11:8) This parable emphasizes the importance of persistence in prayer. We should not give up when we do not receive an immediate answer to our prayers. Instead, we must continue to pray and trust in God's timing and plan.

6. Pray with the Holy Spirit's guidance

The sixth proper way to pray is to pray with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In the book of Romans 8:26-27, Paul tells us, "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance with the will of God." The Holy Spirit helps us to pray according to God's will, even when we do not know what to pray for. We must rely on the Holy Spirit's guidance in our prayer life.

7. Pray in Jesus' name

The seventh proper way to pray is to pray in Jesus' name. In the Gospel of John 14:13-14, Jesus says, "And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it." When we pray in Jesus' name, we acknowledge our dependence on Him and our submission to His will. We must pray in accordance with His character and purposes, seeking to bring glory to Him.

In conclusion,

prayer is a vital part of the Christian life, and it is essential that we pray in a proper way that aligns with Biblical principles. We must pray with faith and belief, humility, gratitude, repentance, perseverance, the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and in Jesus' name. As we cultivate a proper prayer life, we will experience the power and presence of God in our lives, and we will grow in our relationship with Him.
